Prehistoric ecosystem found in Israeli cave - Yahoo! News

“The cave was completely sealed off from the world, including from water and nutrients seeping through rock crevices above. Scientists who discovered the cave believe it has been intact for millions of years.”

I need a big red button too…then I’d get all the ladies…

Chicken and Egg Problem Solved:

Java Pimp writes “It seems scientists and philosophers now agree which came first. The Egg. From the CNN article: ‘Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal’s life. Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg. Professor John Brookfield, a specialist in evolutionary genetics at the University of Nottingham, told the UK Press Association the pecking order was clear.’ So, does this mean we can now show P=NP?”

This one is for Zoo Boy. Let the debate begin.

So, I felt good that in looking at this list, I had only willingly used #15, begrudgingly used #8, and I still have #20, not that I am sure I ever used it for its intended purpose. I did hack it into a legitimate barcode scanner for a while though. At 3/25 I figure I have a pretty good Crap-Tech Barometer.

Well, I haven’t read the full contents of this bill, but there are a couple of things that I do really like about what I have read. Also, I am not sure if this needs to pass the Senate now or what, (politics and legal process are not my specialty), but I think this is a major step forward in the Net Neutrality issue. One of the provisions that I really enjoy, as long as I am reading it correctly, is Sec. 28(a)(4). of the bill.

Sec. 28. (a) It shall be unlawful for any broadband network provider–(4) to prohibit a user from attaching or using a device on the provider’s network that does not physically damage or materially degrade other users’ utilization of the network;

Now, correct me if I am wrong, but does that say that as long as my server (”device attached to the provider’s network”) isn’t materially degrading the other users utilization (”isn’t too high bandwidth”), then they can’t technically make it against the T&C of service? While I sneak by right now because my home server is really only accessed by myself, this is an interesting provision.

JohnnyV Update Information

As of Friday May 19 2006 10:42 JohnnyV is 6 months and 4 days old. Thanks to all our contributors for posting 417 articles and generating 5000 page views (and counting).

Since JohnnyV’s launch we have add a few new contributors and also a few new technologies. For those who may not have noticed we added a “Geo Visitors link located down the left side of the site (Thank you to Mr. Tex). This shows us geographically who has visited the site in the last 24hrs. Here is a direct link Geo Visitors

I also have added us to the Google Analytics Project which allows better statistics of who and what people are reading. I am looking for an easy way to publish this info so all readers may view it just as the current stats on Bravenet. JohnnyV Bravenet Stats Check out what browsers and Operating systems are on top etc.

So where do we go from here? Here are a few ideas.
- fact or fiction articles debating conspiracy theories
- moving to a Wordpress server and adding new functionality and flexibility. Such as sub catagories for articles like geek, gaming, science, etc. or reader votes on articles

As always lets here your input, the good, bad, and ugly. Also if there is anyone that reads that would like to be a contributor, comment to this post and I will set you up.

Thanks again to all who read and contributed in making this site a success.

Mr.O

One more thing…. For our OS X users I have a JohnnyV widget that tracks the RSS feed. Basics are done, a few more features are in development. If anyone would like an early release let me know.

I always intrigued by photo mosaics, and actually have built a few of my own. This is a pretty amazing mosaic concept.

Internet2 has released a Mac OS X Tiger widget that will verify your internet connection and be able to show off your wired into the fastest place in cyberspace

Totally geeky..but kind of cool?…

Now that you're done hacking your Personal Computer, how about hacking your Family Car? CNet News has an article on just what people are doing.

Elephants Dream - Download & Watch

This is a 10min 3D animation short film. It was produced under “the orange open movie project”. The imagery is stunning, and the story a bit strange. Finally they used all opensource software to create this film.

The download sites they have listed are a bit slow, so if you know your way around BitTorrent I suggest going that route. I had the 300mb version down in about 20mins.

OK, so since they cross-bred, technically they’re sub-species but it’s still pretty interesting and the picture really shows that this is no normal polar bear. I wonder if this has anything to do with the loss of ice flows that polar bears usually live on and the fact that they have had to live more on the “mainlands” where grizzlies are found?

Last chromosome in human genome sequenced | Reuters.com

“LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists have reached a landmark point in one of the world’s most important scientific projects by sequencing the last chromosome in the Human Genome, the so-called “book of life”.

Chromosome 1 contains nearly twice as many genes as the average chromosome and makes up eight percent of the human genetic code.

It is packed with 3,141 genes and linked to 350 illnesses including cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.”
