Well played Anonymous if that’s your real name. Are we talking about mosquitoes or the trustworthiness of greeks. In your example of luring intellectuals to Greece while keeping out tourists, aren’t you just supporting the theory (although not much of a theory when you are knee deep in honey covered evidence) that greeks can’t be trusted.

By the by I also said they are a nice people, why isn’t anyone focusing on that. Some of my best friends are greeks (or is it geeks I guess both). Besides just cause you didn’t get bit just means they are being selective, its classic survival. I can’t speak for the mosquitoes in WI but here they can be a problem with their salsa music and their make out parties. Here is video on what I deal with, lets watch and learn.

Wait what about growth hormones…

Ok, we are still talking about super-mosquitos. My original point was that, according to mr. o's own claim that 'those greeks can't be trusted', then why believe these mosquitos exist at all? Maybe the story is made up, maybe to scare off the tourists that trash the city in the summer, and instead, trick a bunch of intellectuals into coming to the city. Hmmm. So talk all you want about mosquitos. I 'Anonymous' was never bitten, nor hunted down, by a mosquito while in Athens.

But could someone please study WI mosquitos. I have a funny feeling they are getting bigger. Maybe from all the growth hormones in our blood from the crap we eat. Hmmm.

The changes in a population of mosquitoes, where selective pressure is high and life cycle is short, could explain the changes described. Though I would be surprised if the original population did not have some capability to see different colours.
One error I believe in the article spoke about "...overpopulation in the Greek capital of over four million has provided them with a healthy food supply." Female mosquitoes need blood to produce eggs. If the "four million" were their primary food supply, instead of nutrients for mosquito eggs, then the males would die out leaving no super population. Unless of course the males have begun to bite also. However the normal mosquito diet consists of nectar and fruit juice, which has no protein, which is why most drink blood. (Wikipedia)
There must also be a survival advantage to the faster wing beats, (easier to evade humans?) as a faster wing beat would use more energy. Mosquitoes who feed primarily on people must be able to evade the slap.

So lets think about this. How long does it take for a species to evolve... Doesn't happen overnight. So the real question is why are we just hearing about this from the "greeks" now? Hiding information maybe, is this mosquito carrying disease and because it can hunt humans so well they realized they better tell someone before an epidemic breaks out? Who knows, but what I can tell you is the world should have been informed when the main carrier of the terrible plagues of history got super powers.

Since when does Greece U have an entomology department?? Anonymous makes a good point, for the good of the world educated and trusted experts in this field should be sent to handle this situation before it gets out of hand. And when the Internet gets over there they can read how JohnnyV exposed their world domination plot through breeding super insects. Ladies and Gentlemen you heard it here first.
