After a break of 16 centuries, Greek pagans are worshipping the ancient gods again – despite furious opposition from the Orthodox church.

So should America invade Greece with the noble purpose of ending religious persecution? I mean someone’s got to stand up for the pagans right?
I guess they should. Who am I to argue, all of America’s purposes are so noble…:)
Yeah, I hope my comment came across as tongue-in-cheek as that’s the way I meant it. We tend to have a double standard on these things. We only get involved if ending the persecution serves our own ends. In this case the situation would have to be opposite, the pagans would have to be persecuting the Christians in order for America to sit up and take notice. On another note, what is the general vibe like in Greece when it comes to the ancient gods? Is there really that much outrage over pagans or did this article kind of blow it out of proportion? Just curious…
Organized religion (especially if it has influence over the state) jumps on anything, ANYTHING, that it percieves might question it. A few years back the head of the Greek Orthodox Church ranted and raved because the government wanted to take the “Religion” category off the national ID cards. Here is a link on the pagan thing that is a bit more rational:

Note the line : “Greece’s ancient religion is believed to have several hundred official followers, mainly middle-aged and elderly academics, lawyers and other professionals, typically with a keen interest in ancient history and a dislike for the Greek Orthodox Church.”
Pagan worship isn’t such a stretch
Also interesting, there are two strands of them, one strand being more nationalistic.
PS I know your comment was tongue-in-cheek, so was mine
“bit more rational” i think ive been insulted.
Let’s all settle on one world religion, that would rid us of religious persecution, holy wars and fanatics. I vote for .
