So, at the bottom, they conclude that the Mac Plus beats the AMD in 8 out of 9 tests. I think thats great, and completely true for an author, but what about other software? Will it run any video app? What if you had to have a different computer on your desk for each application, or if no piece of hardware could be generalized, and everything had its own embeded system? A seperate device for Word, another for Excel, a third for Warcraft, not to mention one for Interwebs? That would be a great way to make money as a hardware manufacturer…… If only I had been born a couple of decades earlier.

Wash your keyboard in the dishwasher

Just because nobody has stirred up any heated debates on here recently, and I happened to have had this topic on the conversation in the last week or so, I figured I would post several links to pages that give advice on washing your keyboard in the dishwasher. First though, I will say that I have done this many times (5+ is a guess), and I have never had a problem with it. I have mostly done it with my IBM Model M keyboard, which is from 1987, but I would be confident in using just about any wired keyboard. The Bluetooth/RF keyboards might work, but, I haven’t tried. In my practice, I have always made sure to use the top shelf, no soap, and nothing else in the dishwasher. In addition, I have never used the heated drying, prefering to let it air-dry for several days. Two days is probably the minimum, however, I have personally always left them to dry for somewhere in the 4-5 days range. (Who doesn’t have at least one extra keyboard lying around?)
And, well, here are the links. Feel free to search more yourself. And, when I get the courage up, I might think about dishwashing the MBP, its keyboard is a little gross….

Replacement Icon Contest for CS3

First, I must say that I am a fan of simplistic design and usability, but I think Adobe is going the wrong way in dropping the recognizable iconography they have used for over a decade on all of their applications. I think that this is an interesting look at their icons, which are cool, but incredibly useless for someone who like me keeps lots of Adobe icons next to each other, and keeps them quite small because they are recognizable icons. Enter a contest to create replicas. I think thats a great way for the userbase to respond to the company and tell them what they think.

So, I am sure most of you already know this, but I am guessing the new Desktops will be out today. I was at the local Geek Superstore (Frye’s) yesterday, and as I passed by the Apple section, I noticed the shelfs were all empty. They had one MBP and a black and white macBook on display, but all of the desktops and external monitors were gone. So, if anyone happens to see that the apple site is updated with the new loot, let me know.

So, I felt good that in looking at this list, I had only willingly used #15, begrudgingly used #8, and I still have #20, not that I am sure I ever used it for its intended purpose. I did hack it into a legitimate barcode scanner for a while though. At 3/25 I figure I have a pretty good Crap-Tech Barometer.

Well, I haven’t read the full contents of this bill, but there are a couple of things that I do really like about what I have read. Also, I am not sure if this needs to pass the Senate now or what, (politics and legal process are not my specialty), but I think this is a major step forward in the Net Neutrality issue. One of the provisions that I really enjoy, as long as I am reading it correctly, is Sec. 28(a)(4). of the bill.

Sec. 28. (a) It shall be unlawful for any broadband network provider–(4) to prohibit a user from attaching or using a device on the provider’s network that does not physically damage or materially degrade other users’ utilization of the network;

Now, correct me if I am wrong, but does that say that as long as my server (“device attached to the provider’s network”) isn’t materially degrading the other users utilization (“isn’t too high bandwidth”), then they can’t technically make it against the T&C of service? While I sneak by right now because my home server is really only accessed by myself, this is an interesting provision.
